Taking the speaker out of the box didn't sacrifice function for form, it maximized both.
A subwoofer is essentially a drum powered by a speaker. The enclosure doesn't just hold the speaker, it is an integral part of the instrument without which the speaker can barely make noise at all. The shape and internal volume along with the thickness and wall density of the enclosure determine its performance. Most subwoofers are boxes not because it is best but because it is easy. Brohn’s motto “Sound is Round” is not just a catchy phrase, it's science.
Eliminating corners vastly reduces resonance in subwoofer performance. Rounding the walls removes flexing weak spots in the center of flat panels making the sub frequencies more consistent and responsive. A round speaker centered in a round enclosure evenly applies pressure to the walls. This allows the sub to build uniform resistance, incredible clean sound, and responsive deep frequencies. Oh, and it's beautiful.
All Brohn subwoofers are passive subs which means they require an external sub specific amplifier. This allows the body of the sub to work unencumbered by electronics, metal plates, and other components which interfere with performance as well as keep them beautiful from every direction.
Brohn is a small craft business operating in Portland Oregon, an ideal home for modern inspiration and high quality lumber sourcing. Before Brohn had a product it had a mission: to create works of art through the craft of woodturning which are as functional as they are beautiful. A fortuitous meeting of two friends; one skilled in technical sound, the other in woodworking, and a broken sub created the first iteration of the wood turned Brohn subwoofer. Many redesigns and honed processes later, Brohn is proud to present its work to all those who appreciate high performance sound equipment and fine woodworking.
